View full detailsWhat makes a gift for a nerd
A nerd is someone who cares about one thing more than other people think is reasonable. That might be computer science, astronomy, a franchise with thirty years of history or a board game with forty pages of rules. That is your chance when giving a present: you do not have to guess what they like, you only need to know what they are into. A gift that hits that interest feels more personal than any expensive all-purpose present. And because nerds usually know their subject well, they notice at once whether a gift was chosen with expertise or only looks that way.
Four ways to the right gift
The easiest is clothing: a shirt with a joke only insiders understand is a badge, not a piece of clothing. The second is gadgets, things nobody needs and everybody wants to pick up, from key finders to a binary wristwatch. The third is the home: mugs, tin signs, lamps and plush toys that bring a topic into daily life. And the fourth is the interest itself, sorted by franchise or field, such as gifts for computer scientists or gifts for scientists. If you cannot decide, there is the Lootbox, a surprise crate with a shirt, gadgets and decor on one theme.
How to spot a good nerd gift
It cannot be explained in one sentence. A doormat reading “There is no place like 127.0.0.1” is a typo to outsiders and a love letter to their own computer for anyone in IT. A good part of our products works on this principle, and many designs come from our own workshop. If you do not get a joke, that is usually a good sign: then it was made for the person you are giving it to. What a design refers to is explained in our Nerd Lexicon in short articles.
Nerd or geek?
The line is blurry, and most people use both words for the same crowd. If anything, the nerd is the specialist who digs into a subject and the geek is the fan who wears it on the outside. For finding a gift it makes no difference, because both want the same thing: something that shows someone takes their subject seriously. In this category you will find ideas for both, in every price range and for every occasion, from Secret Santa to a milestone birthday.
