When the first episode of "SpongeBob SquarePants" aired on Nickelodeon in the USA on May 1, 1999, nobody had any idea of the groundbreaking success the series would have.

The characters and plot were invented by marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg, who is largely responsible for the success of the series. Together with his team, he incorporated his own childhood memories into the first 60 episodes of the series, which are regarded in dedicated fan circles as the only true, original SpongeBob episodes.

The great popularity of the series is mainly based on the lovingly and detailed designed characters.
